The Crimson Sacrament

"Blood remembers what the stones have forgotten."

For one thousand years, the Kingdom of Aethelgard has stood impregnable while every neighboring realm dissolved in fire, civil war, and oceanic maelstroms. The silent cornerstone of this millennium of peace is an artifact guarded in the deepest palace vaults: a ruby blade capable of slaying any being in existence, demanding only the bearer's own soul in return.

⏳ Historical Chronology

The Decline of the Surrounding Realms

While Aethelgard has stood unbroken for 1,000 years through the secret deterrent of the Ruby Blade, every neighboring civilization fell into catastrophe.

The Sundering of Valoria

Succession dispute ignited a bloody four-decade civil war between great houses. The kingdom collapsed into lawless warlord enclaves now known as the Sundered Marches, governed from Talon's Rest.

The Elysian Cataclysm

Mages attempted to tap a primal subterranean ley-nexus for eternal harvest. The ritual destabilized, discharging a pyroclastic wave that scorched the paradise into the Ashen Wastes, centered around Cinderfall.

The Shattering of Solara

A supernatural oceanic maelstrom—rumored to be a rogue elemental storm or divine retribution—shattered the maritime archipelago into the Broken Isles, with Shattered Point as its corsair capital.

Present Day

The Millennial Jubilee

Aethelgard marks 1,000 years of reign. Amidst tournaments and masquerades, the players' security squad arrives from Faylight just as conspirators move to breach the sovereign vault.

🩸 The Central Turning Point

The Ruby Blade

Known in Heretical Texts as: "The Tyrant's Bane" & "The Sovereign's Cost"

Forged with a blade of pure ruby crystalline glass and a handle carved from black lacquered bone, this dagger possesses unknown, legendary origins. Its capabilities are guarded as the crown's most sacred state secret: it can kill whomever the bearer desires, but solely on the condition that the wielder surrenders their own life and soul in the strike.

The Soul-for-Soul Covenant

"A sacrifice of soul for soul binds the tyrant's bane." When plunged into the heart of the wielder with true intention, the chosen victim on any plane is instantly slain. Both bearer and target disintegrate into scarlet ash.

The Purity of Will (Why Coercion Always Fails)

The blade cannot be triggered by proxies, thralls, mind-controlled victims, or paid assassins. Centuries ago, Aethelgard tried to control the power by forcing criminals and peasants to wield it; every attempt failed catastrophically until monarchs realized only genuine, self-sacrificing conviction will awaken the enchantment.

The Sovereign Vault of Aethelgard

Restricted to the personal possession of the King and high religious nobles, the dagger rests behind seven obsidian wards in the palace's deepest vault. Whispers claim that during lunar eclipses, a faint crimson glow bleeds through the stones of the highest palace parapets.

Player Allegiance · Hereditary Martial Order

The Aegis Cohort

"One Wall. One Breath. One Duty."

A prestigious security guild operating across all known kingdoms. Unlike common mercenary outfits, the Aegis Cohort is a generational caste where membership is inherited from parent to child. Members are trained from early childhood in unit cohesion, interlocking shield maneuvers, and tactical confrontation.

Player Role: You are a bonded squad within the 4th Company, contracted to provide high-tier security for the Millennial Jubilee in Aethelgard.
Scholars & Hidden Dissidents

The Court Archivists

"The ink outlives the empire."

Led by the enigmatic Lord Alden Vance, these high-ranking scholars maintain the historical annals of the realm. Having pieced together redacted royal texts and court disappearances, they know the thousand-year peace was bought through secret ritual murders.

Plot Dynamic: Lord Vance seeks trustworthy outside agents—untainted by court corruption—to help him expose or neutralize the vault.
The Monarchy & Secret Police

The Sanguine Crown & Inquisition

"Order at all costs."

King Aldous IV and Grand Inquisitor Morgana Vane rule with velvet gloves concealing iron gauntlets. They enforce strict censorship: anyone speaking of the palace's crimson glow or questioning the kingdom's miraculous stability is quietly silenced.

Plot Dynamic: The party is in their employ for the festival, but Morgana's censors watch every outsider with hawk-eyed scrutiny.
Underground Syndicate

The Hollow Hand

"No cage holds what is already stolen."

A clandestine syndicate of master burglars, disgraced Valorian duelists, and relic smugglers based out of Talon's Rest. Aware that the royal vault contains a relic of unimaginable value, they plan to use the Millennial Jubilee masquerade as cover for a daring vault heist.

Plot Dynamic: Dangerous competitors or unpredictable conspirators when infiltration begins.
Legendary 5e Artifact

The Ruby Sacrament (Artifact Rulebook)

How the lethal "Soul-for-Soul" mechanic functions mechanically at the game table for DMs and players.

True Will Attunement

Cannot be attuned through mind control, geas, intimidation, or mercenary payment. If an unwilling or coerced creature attempts the rite, they suffer 10d10 psychic damage and the blade remains inert.

The Soul-for-Soul Strike

As an action, the wielder impales their own heart while naming their target anywhere on the plane. The target takes 1,000 necrotic and force damage (ignoring resistances/immunities). The wielder's soul is consumed and both bodies turn to red crystal dust.

Lunar Eclipse Resonance

Within 500ft of the blade during a lunar eclipse, spellcasters who roll a natural 1 on an arcane spell suffer 1d8 necrotic damage as their blood vibrates to the dagger's frequency.

Guild Class Options

Aegis Cohort Squad Tactics

Because all players were raised in the hereditary security guild, every party member gains access to these squad synergy maneuvers:

Shield-Lock Interception (Reaction)

When an ally within 5 feet is targeted by an attack, use your reaction to interpose your shield or blade, granting +2 AC (+3 if using a shield).

Breaching Cadence (Bonus Action)

Once per combat, call out cadence: all guild squad-mates within 15ft gain +10ft movement speed and advantage on their next Athletics or Acrobatics check.

Vanguard Focus (Passive)

Advantage on saving throws against being surprised or frightened while within 10 feet of a conscious guild squad-mate.

Exploration & Social Stealth

The Jubilee Suspicion Gauge

Tracked on a 0 to 10 scale during the Millennial Jubilee festivities in Aethelgard.

Level 0–2: Honored Guests

Free access to public festival grounds, standard palace passes, friendly merchant interactions.

Level 3–5: Whispers & Tails

Inquisitor informants trail the party. DC for Stealth and Deception checks in aristocratic areas increases by +2.

Level 6–9: Palace Lockdown

The Obsidian Cloister is sealed. Mute paladins patrol the corridors. Guild charter is suspended.

Level 10: High Treason Alert

Grand Inquisitor Morgana orders immediate capture or execution. The festival bells toll in warning.
